Tyre Width & Pressure - What Do The Pros Run? | Giro D'Italia 2014

Clock00:00, Monday 2nd June 2014

Tyre widths and pressures can vary massively between riders, depending on their preference. We asked the pro teams what they were running ahead of Stage 20 of the Giro D'Italia.

In terms of width, the pros will generally opt for a 23mm or 25mm. These days, teams tend to favour 25s due to added durability and grip, with minimal penalties in terms of weight. However, with some types of wheel, a 23mm often fits better.

As far as pressures go, there are even more variables. Everything from the weather conditions to terrain, even the weight of a rider plays it's part. Riders will run lower pressures when the roads are wet to improve grip, typically around 7 - 7.5 bar (100-105 psi). This rises to 8 - 8.5 bar (115 - 120 psi) in dry conditions.

Remember, the pros use tubular tyres, which work at higher pressures that regular clinchers. If you use inner tubes and would like to apply this information, it might be wise to drop these values by about 15-20 psi.
