Tour de France 2021 Stage 8 Highlights | Race Blown Apart In the Alps!

Clock00:00, Saturday 3rd July 2021

Seemingly a day for the breakaway, Stage 8 of the tour saw Mathieu van der Poel valiantly attempt to hold his yellow jersey ahead of Wout van Aert and a blistering Tadej Pogačar.

From the longest stage to the one of the shortest, Stage 8 will see the riders make their first foray into the mountains on a 151km-long route from Oyonnax to Le Grand-Bornand. The first two thirds of the stage are relatively tame, but once the riders pass through Bonneville at 57km to go they’ll stare down the triple threat of the Côte de Mont-Saxonnex (5.7km at 8.3%), Col de Romme (8.8km at 8.9%) and Col de la Colombière (7.5km at 8.5%). These are the first three Cat-1 climbs of the 2021 Tour and they fall in rapid succession, meaning any gaps created on the first will then be increasingly magnified on the latter two.
