Brand New Cervelo S5 & Retro Bike Special | GCN Tech Show Ep. 40

First up is confirmation of that Instagram post from a few weeks back is the official announcement of the new Cervelo s5. What is different then? It’s a disc brake only bike, something possibly controversial to many out there, and one of the possible reasons for this is because its predecessor was designed around 23mm tyres, but this new model can take up to 28’s as there is 38mm between the stays. Let's talk about the other details then, the headtube, that's 13% stiffer and the bottom bracket 25% stiffer. And we must touch on the geometry, the trail has been lengthened to give improved stability and the bottom bracket is a bit lower. And for consistent handling, there are 5 specific forks for the respective frames sizes.

Last week we asked you what retro tech you wish we still had! And the comments have been coming in, thick and fast. We talk through some of the best that you picked out. Our friends at Assos are introducing the S9 shorts after a 6-year development! What is mindblowing is that the shorts are made from just 2 panels, incorporating get this, a rollbar. That makes sure the pad stays where it should when you corner or get out of the saddle.

Time for a bit of tech from the men's world road race. Team Sky riders Gianni Moscon and Michal Kwiatkowski were using wheels from German brand Lightweight, who make wheels that are, Lightweight. Presumably to give them a possible benefit on what was a brutal course. Why this is getting a mention though, is because generally riders use the equipment of their trade team, but it’s pretty common that riders contracts actually state the use of that equipment in racing and training for their team. But representing their country is a different matter, so presumably, they won't be getting a telling off.
