Brake pads
For most cyclists, it’s likely that you were taught to use both brake levers on the bike when growing up. Whilst this is great advice for a beginner, as you’re unlikely to skid or go over the bars, for most experienced cyclists we tend to use the front brake only probably about 90% of the time. The reason being, it is the most effective in slowing you down, it does require getting used to the feel of the front brake though.

If you’re handy with the front braking technique, we bet one pair is worn out more than the other. Swap them around, put those front pads into the rear. There we are, your brake pads should last you a bit longer now!

Chain Cleaning
A filthy chain is going to wear out quicker due to the grime on it acting as a cutting paste against the chain itself, as well as on the rest of your drivetrain components meaning you are going to have to spend more often. We're never going to get bored of telling people how important chain cleanliness is. And Jon is going to let you into a little secret here on how to save money and have a clean chain.

Reuse cables
If you have a frayed rear cable, either derailleur or gear. Don’t just bin it. Instead, when you replace it, because you are going to replace it aren’t you? Cut it using cable cutters just before the fray, and then keep this cable as a spare. But a spare for what? The front derailleur or brake. This way, if you have a frayed cable or even a snapped one, you can easily re-use it.
