Wahoo has added more functionality to its ELEMNT computers

Wahoo has added new functionality to its popular ELEMNT Roam and ELEMNT Bolt computers which makes it possible to control smart bike lights and music players.

The latest additions, which are available on existing models through software updates, also include a new dark mode to improve visibility in various lighting conditions, while Wahoo has made its ELEMNT computers compatible with more third-party training applications. All of these features are available now, while Wahoo says the ability to control GoPro cameras will also be added in the near future.

Founder of Wahoo Fitness, Chip Hawkins, says the changes reflect the demands of the Wahoo community.

“At Wahoo we are committed to continually improving rider’s experience with their Wahoo devices,” he said in a press release.

“Through regular software updates, we are able to listen to our community, then implement many of the upgrades that they request to improve their rides and performance.”

Control lights remotely

Thanks to the first of these new features, users will be able to control smart bike lights remotely through their Wahoo ELEMNT computer.

Wahoo says that the feature essentially turns the computer into “a centralised hub for bike lighting management”, through which users can operate the light by turning it on or off, or toggling through the various modes. There is also an ‘automatic light activation’ function that will turn the lights on and off automatically at the beginning and end of rides, respectively.

The new function is compatible with ANT+ smart bike lights.

Listen to music

The music control function sticks to the theme of adding control over other devices, in this case music players.

It replicates the functionality of your music device by making it possible to control music playback, such as playing, pausing or skipping songs, while you can also adjust the volume.

Capture GoPro footage from your computer

While not available yet, Wahoo says that its Wahoo ELEMNT computers will soon be able to control GoPro cameras too. This is likely to be a popular one and anyone wanting to use the function won’t have to wait long, as Wahoo says it’ll be available in the near future.

The functionally takes away the need to remove a GoPro camera from its mount as all of the controls are transferred across to the Wahoo computer, so the camera can be operated remotely. It won’t zap across live images to the computer, but you will be able to stop and start recording, capture photos, and adjust the camera mode.

New dark mode and more third-party training apps

Among the final changes, Wahoo’s new ‘Training Plans Integration’ means that you can now transfer workouts from a greater number of training apps to your computer. Its computers were previously available with some apps, such as Wahoo SYSTM and TrainingPeaks, but this has been expanded to include Humango, FinalSurge, Nolio and Join. Wahoo has promised that many more will join this list in the coming months.

And, finally, a dark mode has been added to the computers too, which Wahoo says results in “improved visibility in various lighting conditions”.
