GCN Tech Clinic: when should I replace my helmet?
Alex is back to unravel your latest tech questions

It’s been a week since the last GCN Tech Clinic and in that time the 2023 Tour de France champion was crowned and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift kicked off with a thrilling stage in Clermont-Ferrand.
Manon Lloyd went to France before the race to see what tech she could uncover, and she made some cool discoveries.
With both Manon and Tech Clinic regular Ollie Bridgewood away, Alex Paton was left in the studio alone to answer your latest tech questions.
Can old chains be reused?
Yes, it’s fine to reuse an old chain as long as it isn't worn beyond the recommended limits (there are special tools to help measure this) and it’s the correct length for the crankset you’re using.
Always keep a used chain which is still in good condition - you never know when you might need it.
Is it safe to use different tread patterns for each gravel tyre?
Many gravel riders mix-and-match tread patterns on their front and rear tyres to optimise performance, usually with a slicker tread on one wheel and a grippy one on the other.
As a rule, use the grippy tyre on the front wheel where it’ll have a greater effect on steering and braking.
What are the benefits of using different tyre widths on each wheel?
Cyclists and brands are always seeking new ways to boost performance. That’s why some riders now use a narrower tyre on their front wheel to the one on the rear, and even some of the pros do it.
Like most modern trends, the set-up is inspired by aerodynamics. A narrower front tyre improves the aero profile of a bike while the rear tyre is hidden by the frame so can be a little wider, which in turns boosts grip.
Can the brake track on carbon rim brake wheels be repaired?
There’s bad news for this one, unfortunately, as damaged or worn brake tracks on carbon rim brake wheels can’t be repaired.
It’s one of the big downsides of rim brakes, and if a brake track is damaged, you’ll have to replace either the wheels or the rims.
Which tyres are best for multi-day adventures?
Nothing deflates a ride quite like a puncture. That becomes an even bigger concern on multi-day rides when you don’t want your progress to be hampered by any frustrating roadside repairs.
Cyclists try lots of different tyres in their attempts to avoid punctures, but which ones are best for multi-day, road-bike adventures with sections of gravel riding?
There are lots of options available, but we recommend sticking to a road tyre rather than a dedicated gravel option. Pick one which features added puncture protection, and opt for the widest size your bike can accommodate.
When should helmets be replaced?
It’s something most cyclists don’t really think about unless they crash, but bike helmets have shelf lives and should be replaced at certain intervals.
Those intervals will vary depending on the brand, but most recommend replacing helmets every two to three years.
