dsm-firmenich bolster squad with arrival of Rachele Barbieri, Abi Smith and Josie Nelson 

Rachele Barbieri, Abi Smith and Josie Nelson will race for dsm-firmenich in 2024

After so far being quiet on the transfer market, 

 have this week announced three big-name arrivals to their women’s squad in the form of 

Barbieri and Smith arrive from the folding WorldTour squads of 

 respectively, whilst 21-year-old Nelson will make her WorldTour team debut after two and a half seasons with

Italian track racer Barbieri will likely slot into the lead-out for Charlotte Kool, as she continues her campaign to threaten Lorena Wiebes’ sprint supremacy.

“I’m looking forward to joining the sprint group and helping Charlotte in the finales,” Barbieri said. “I’m ready to change a lot on the bike and learn from all of the staff and experts in the team as best as I can so I can improve even more as a rider. I have big dreams and ambitions still and I think that at Team dsm-firmenich all of the support and resources are available for me to help realise them.”

Young riders Smith and Nelson may have slightly less defined roles, as their specialisms continue to develop. Smith has shown strength in the Classics and flatter stage races, whilst Nelson has been something of an all-rounder so far, getting up there in sprints but at the same time impressing on hillier days, most notably her fourth-placed finish on the Queen stage of the Tour of Scandinavia in 2022.

“I like the way the team takes on young riders and develops them,” Nelson said. “This was a really important factor for me as I know I still have a lot to learn on and off the bike. I am looking forward to the challenges of stepping up to a WWT team and having the support to grow as a rider. I see myself as a Classics rider or a climber but I don’t want to close any doors yet. I still need to find my strengths and race style and the best way this contributes to the team.”

For Smith, her hopes for the future seem to be around a team role, saying: “I really want to be a useful asset to the team and find where I can help our leaders in the best possible way. Of course, the goal with the team for the next few years is to win as many races as we can; I can’t wait to ride with the squad.”

Though Smith and Nelson are both still young riders, this year’s recruitment marks a different approach for dsm-firmenich, after the team signed solely WorldTour debutants - and four riders straight out of the junior ranks - for 2023, at the same time as losing some of their most experienced riders.

The arrival of three riders who are already proven in the WorldTour peloton will add some more experience back into the ranks of the team that is known for developing younger riders.

Even into October, the transfer market in both the men’s and women’s peloton is still rumbling on, with several big moves and extensions still being announced by the top women’s teams.

After being one of the most active teams in terms of signings so far this year, Lidl-Trek confirmed on Monday that Australian Lauretta Hanson has extended with the team through to the end of 2025.

“It was an easy decision to renew with Lidl-Trek for another two years and I’m really happy to be staying on as part of this wonderful group of riders. We have a great environment and fantastic support here and I really feel like I’ve found my home in this team. I had my best season yet in 2023 and I’m looking forward to building on that and pushing for more in the coming seasons,” she said.

Hanson’s extension brings the team’s confirmed roster for 2024 up to 19, the biggest in the WorldTour currently.

New team EF Education-Cannondale has also been hot on the market this year, building a team from scratch as they look to build a future WorldTour team, and general manager Esra Tromp recently revealed to 

that they will be adding two more riders to their roster for 2024. The names of those riders are expected to be announced soon.
