Oscar Sevilla signs up for his 26th season at age 47

Oscar Sevilla is signing on again for season 26

, a 47-year-old veteran, has signed up for another season of professional racing with the Colombian Continental team 

The Spaniard, who has adopted Colombia as his new professional home for the past decade after serving a doping suspension, will be completing his 26th season of racing in 2024.

“I’ll continue racing with Team Medellín-EPM. Right now we’re organising the calendar, the races, as we don’t know who else is going to form part of the 2024 team yet,” Sevilla told 

“I took a very short break in the off-season, because right now that’s better for me. So I’m moving on with the physical preparation, gym work and running as part of my build-up for 2024. I think I take every year on a month-by-month basis, enjoying what I most like doing, which is riding my bike and contributing to the team’s success. I hope it’ll be a good year."

Sevilla’s first contract was with Kelme-Costa Blanca in 1998. Notably, Sevilla’s first big win was back in 1999 at the Tour de Romandie where he won stage 4 ahead of Laurent Jalabert.

Other top results from Sevilla include a second-place finish at the 2001 Vuelta a España and a seventh-place finish at the Tour de France in the same year. Beyond that 2001 season, Sevilla was a solid WorldTour rider until Operacion Puerto ensnared the Spaniard.

Two years at Rock Racing followed his time at the WorldTour, before he was suspended in 2010 for a positive doping test. He never returned to the European peloton, with the rest of his career spent on Colombian teams.

Even though Sevilla is no longer competing in WorldTour races, let alone winning WorldTour stages, he is still a significant player in South American racing.

In 2023 alone, Sevilla had a full calendar of 78 race days across three continents, with three general classification victories including a win at the Tour of Hainan where Sevilla beat Seb Berwick (Israel-Premier Tech) in a 2.PRO race.

Team Medellín-EPM will be doing a full slate of UCI racing with the one-week racing running from January to October in South America, Central America and the United States. Sevilla is currently the only rider announced for the team in 2024 at this point.

, was kidnapped and robbed on Thursday, with the Colombian cyclist held for several hours against his will.

According to several reports three culprits approached López near his farm in Pesca, Boyacá in Colombia before holding him against his will at his family home.

López was eventually freed and made his way to the local police in order to file a criminal report. 

Colombian media report that the incident took place on Thursday, September 21 at around 5pm local time. 

“They detained him and stole his Ford truck, a cell phone and $800,000 [$200 USD] Around 10:30 at night, López approached the Sogamoso police station and filed a complaint,” stated Colonel María Margarita Mantilla.

The 29-year-old's racing career is currently on hold after he was suspended by the sport's governing body, the UCI, in July due to a "potential anti-doping rule violation (ADRV)".

Before his suspension in July, López was able to pick up a number of wins in the first half of the year as part of the Team Medellín - EPM squad. He won the Vuelta a San Juan in January, the Vuelta a Colombia, a stage in the Tour of the Gila and several other victories.
