Egan Bernal

Egan Bernal is a professional cyclist who rides for the Ineos Grenadiers team. Bernal is a former winner of the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia having won the Tour in 2019 on just his second attempt. He won the Giro in 2021.

The Colombian rider turned professional with Team Sky at the start of the 2018 season having impressed at Androni Sidermec during the previous two seasons. In 2017 he won the Tour de l’Avenir, as well as impressing against WorldTour teams in Tirreno Adriatico and several Italian one-day races.

During his first season in the WorldTour, he won the Amgen Tour of California and finished 15th in his debut Tour de France, where he helped teammate Geraint Thomas to the top step of the podium. 

In 2019, Bernal became the first Colombian to win the Tour de France. During that same year, Bernal won Paris-Nice, the Tour de Suisse and Gran Piemonte. A back injury scuppered Bernal’s Tour de France attempt in 2020 and he abandoned the race in the final week while sitting 16th overall. His Giro d’Italia win a year later signified a return to form and he went into the following season with a return to the Tour in his sights. However, in January 2022, the Colombian suffered a career-threatening crash during a training ride and he sustained over 20 fractures. He returned to racing in the second half of the campaign with twelve race days in total.

Now 26 years of age, Bernal continued his comeback in 2023 and his gradual improvement saw him selected for the Tour de France in July. Operating as a valued teammate, Bernal played a mentorship role for young stars Tom Pidcock and Carlos Rodríguez, with both teammates singing the praises of the Colombian. That comeback tour continued at the Vuelta a España in 2023, as the Colombian built towards a return to form in 2024 and beyond.
