Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek) is a general classification rider for the American squad and a former winner of the Giro d’Italia.

Geoghegan Hart began at Team Sky, as it was then called, in 2017 after a successful U23 career at Axeon Hagens Berman. He progressed slowly but steadily at Team Sky for the first couple of seasons with the British outfit. Strong GC results at races like the Amgen Tour of California, Tour of the Alps and Vuelta a Burgos in his first three seasons at Sky showed his potential as a stage racer, while solid places at the Italian classics and near misses at stages of the 2019 Vuelta a España highlighted his race craft.

In 2020, Geoghegan Hart had the opportunity to come good on that potential. After his team Ineos leader, Geraint Thomas, crashed out of that year’s Giro d’Italia, Geoghegan Hart was free to ride for his own result. After losing time initially in the race, Geoghegan Hart slowly clawed his way back into the fight for the pink jersey, before finally overhauling Jai Hindley on the final day’s time trial to take the overall victory.

It was a remarkable achievement and taken in the most sensational style throughout the final week of the race, catapulting the Londoner into the sport's upper echelon.

Geoghegan Hart was blighted by injury, illness and misfortune over the subsequent two seasons, but demonstrated his true abilities once more in the early knockings of 2023.

Podium finishes at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and Tirreno-Adriatico were soon followed by the overall win and two stage victories at the Tour of the Alps, before the former winner demonstrated sensational form throughout the first 10 stages of the Giro d'Italia. It was to be heartbreak, though, for Geoghegan Hart, who while sitting third place and five seconds from the race lead, crashed out of the race in a tumble that resulted in his femur fracturing into six pieces.

That was to be the end of Geoghegan Hart's 2023 season and ultimately, the end of his Ineos Grenadiers career, with the Brit signing terms to join Lidl-Trek for 2024 and beyond. With months of painstaking rehabilitation behind him, Geoghegan Hart joined his new team with a clean bill of health at their December training camp, and will be one of Lidl-Trek's Grand Tour leaders in 2024.
