Hugh Carthy is a British professional climber who races on the EF Education-EasyPost team.

Carthy is a former third-place finisher at the Vuelta a España, having won a stage and rounded out the podium behind Primoz Roglič and Richard Carapaz in 2020.

Carthy hails from Preston and got his big break with Caja Rural in 2015 after spending two years with Rapha Condor. Carthy spent two years on the Spanish team and developed into a promising rider with a string of impressive results, including victory in the Vuelta Asturias Julio Alvarez Mendo. He moved to Cannondale-Drapac at the start of 2017 and has been one of the American team's flagship riders since the arrival of Education First as the title sponsor.

A stage win in the Tour de Suisse came in 2019, along with 11th in the Giro d’Italia, before a huge breakout season in 2020.

Since his Vuelta a España podium finish, Carthy has struggled to replicate a similar vein of form but has clocked up two top-10 finishes in the Giro d'Italia. Nonetheless, there have been successes elsewhere with a stage victory in the Vuelta a Burgos and third place at the 2023 Tour of the Alps.

Heading into the final year of his contract with EF Education-EasyPost, Carthy will be hoping for a more consistent campaign and the return of his best legs at a Grand Tour. The Lancastrian has only ridden the Tour de France once, but that brought his best form to date at the subsequent Vuelta. Perhaps 2024 will see Carthy return to the biggest race of the season.
