Stage 9: Avezzano – Napoli (214km)
The first week of the 2024 Giro d’Italia ends with the second longest stage of the race, a 214km test from Avezzano to Napoli. On paper, it’s another stage for the sprinters but there’s a slight sting in the tail with a short burst of small climbs packed into the final 35km. None of the ascents are categorised but they’re punchy enough to do some damage and if any of the sprinters have been suffering through the first week then they could struggle to feature in the final.
The route passes by Lazio and Cassino with a fourth category climb, the Monte di Procida, introducing the undulating finale that lays ahead. It’s a similar finish to the one we saw at the Giro d’Italia in 2022, when Thomas De Gendt came out on top, but that stage had roughly double the vertical metres.
This should be another day for the sprinters though, and the GC riders will relish a relatively quiet – if not long – day off before the rest day and start of the second week of racing.
