Stage 5: Genova – Lucca (178km)
Stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia is a true-to-tradition transition stage as the race works its way south to Tuscany. While the profile isn’t pan-flat, the day is straightforward enough that a sprint should be expected after the 178km trek from Genova to Lucca.
That said, it’s far from an easy day in the saddle, and the opening phase of the stage is littlered with uncategorised climbs and undulating terrain. We’re likely to see a decent-sized break form on this stage, and it will once again be up to the sprinters, rather than the maglia rosa, to control affairs. If one single sprinter has dominated the racing so far then expect their team to sit back and force the rest of the pack to chase.
That could give the break somewhat of an early advantage but as the stage continues south it’s likely that the race will regroup before another fast finish. There’s the small matter of the Passo del Bracco but that comes inside the first two hours of racing, while the finale isn’t too technical once the riders head through a couple of tight corners with just over 2km remaining. Another flat finish, another bunch sprint.
