Stage 19: Mortegliano – Sappada (157km)

Normally, the grand finale of the Giro d’Italia begins on the final Friday of the race on stage 19. Chris Froome’s famous raid in the 2018 Giro was on stage 19; Vincenzo Nibali’s comeback to win the 2016 corsa rosa began in earnest on stage 19; and last year’s queen stage was on – you guessed it – stage 19. Nevertheless, the 2024 Giro breaks that mould with a fairly tame medium mountain stage on the final Friday, easing the riders back into the climbing after stage 18’s sprinter-friendly day out.

At 157km from Mortegliano to Sappada it’s a short stage but one that still packs a punch, with 2,850m of elevation gain and all the serious climbing condensed into the back end of the stage. It’s fairly gently uphill for the first 100km before three categorised climbs. The first, Passo Ouron, ranges from 9.7% to an unpleasant 18% for 4.4km, with the gentler Sella Valcalda following almost immediately after the descent. Once the riders get off those slopes it’s back uphill once more, with the Cima Sappada (8.5km, 4.7%) topping out with 6 km to the line for a final summit finish (of sorts) at this year’s Giro.

Given the big tests earlier in the week and the likelihood that the GC gaps will be large by this point, expect this stage to go to a breakaway, with teams that have yet to step onto the podium angling to get a man up the road.
