Stage 18: Fiera di Primiero – Padova (178km)

Stage 18 gives the peloton a well-earned transition day back away from the mountains and towards the coast in the Veneto. With only 550m of climbing in 178km and no categorised climbs in the back half of the stage, the podium should be decided by the sprinters – or at least the sprinters that have survived three days of hard climbing.

If the days before are particularly gruelling a surprise breakaway could find its way into contesting the finish, as has happened in the past in Veneto transition stages. However, on paper, this stage should be one for the fast men.

Starting in Fiera di Primiero the peloton heads onto the short category-4 climb at Lamon in the opening 20km to stretch the legs, before the terrain levels out into a slightly downhill false flat for the final 100km of the stage.

If it does come down to a sprint, it should be an exciting one as the race has placed three turns in the final kilometre in Padova. With tight roads and those changes in direction, the final will be frantic, especially after some high-profile withdrawals have massively opened up the field of potential sprinters in contention for a Grand Tour stage victory.
