Stage 17: Selva di Val Gardena – Passo del Brocon (159km)

After two 200+km mountain stages to start the Giro’s stint in the Alps, stage 17 brings the distance down but keeps the same climbing intensity, packing 4,200 metres of elevation gain, five categorised climbs and a summit finish into a 159km run from Selva di val Gardena to Passo Brocon.

The climbing begins from the gun with the 2,240 metre Passo Sella (9km, 7.3%) providing a lung-busting springboard for any would-be attackers in an early breakaway. Unlike the previous stage, however, there is no long valley to disrupt teams’ tactics as the next climb comes soon after. The Passo Rollee (20km, 4.6%) and the Passo Gobbera (5.8km, 5.8%) make up the middle portion of the stage before the decisive action will come, once again, on the day’s final two climbs.

The Passo Brocon takes centre stage with two different approaches to the mountain making up the final portion of the stage. The first is the longer of the two tests, a 13km, 6.1% climb topping out with 32km to go, before the race descends and takes a second stab at the peak with a more irregular 12km, 6.4% climb to a second summit finish in as many days. The last climb reaches 13% at points but flattens out (comparatively) to around 5% for the final 2km.
