Stage 12: Martiniscuro – Fano (193km)
Stage 12 is another run along the coast with a flat first 50km by the Adriatic before the parcours tracks inland and into a spiky, up-and-down profile with 2,100m of altitude gain over the day. It's the perfect warm-up to the Alpine passes that will surely produce fireworks in stages later in the week, and at 193km it’s another long day in the saddle, with 10 short climbs to tackle after that opening stretch.
After the final climb there’s a flat run through the historic city centre of Fano which should suit the sprinters, but this also looks like a stage with plenty of potential for a breakaway of puncheurs.
On top of four category 4 climbs there are several other steep uncategorised bumps in the road, which is twisty as well as punchy, with hairpin bends throughout and a complicated finale.
The final ascent of Monte Giove – 9km to the finish and with ramps of over 10% – has never been climbed before at the Giro. Once the riders descend the road into Fano several bends and 90 degree turns will make for a hair-raising finale before the slightly uphill final kilometre.
