Crashes and illness forced 14 riders out of the Vuelta a España during the first week
As the Vuelta a España rolls into Madrid for its finale on Sunday evening, the peloton has been reduced in size from the bunch that started out from Barcelona three weeks previously.
A total of 176 riders took to the start line, and now 148 remain.
It has been a more attritional race compared to this year's Tour de France, where 150 made it to Paris, but much less so than a rain-soaked and crash-laden Giro d'Italia, finished by just 125 riders.
The Vuelta has had its challenges, from the rain storms in Barcelona, to the heat of the coast and the leg-sapping climbs in the mountains.
28 riders have dropped out of the race, including some big names in Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers), Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers), Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Eddie Dunbar (Jayco AlUla).
Most teams still have their full roster, including dominant force Jumbo-Visma, who have the overall winner in Sepp Kuss and the other two podium finishers in Jonas Vingegaard and Primož Roglič. Ineos Grenadiers have lost two riders, though Geraint Thomas has refused to throw in the towel dispute his spate of crashes and misforunte. The worst-off team are Jayco AlUla, who area heading into Madrid with only three riders.
Here is an up-to-date list of all the riders who have abandoned the Vuelta a España so far.
