Roglič wins and Vingegaard closes in on the GC lead of Kuss on the fearsome Angrilu

Grand Tours dominated by one team are supposed to lack excitement, but at this 2023 Vuelta a España the Jumbo-Visma lock at the top of the GC standings has only created more chaos. On stage 17, that internal struggle between Sepp Kuss, Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglič came to a boil on the slopes of the fearsome Alto de Angrilu.

Roglič ultimately came away with the win, but the big story was the two original Jumbo-Visma leaders – Roglič and Vingegaard – distancing Kuss after the three had already dropped all of their rivals from other teams. While Kuss radioed ahead to his teammates to go for the win, the intrigue of an inter-team GC struggle on the final two mountainous days remaining has enlivened the race.

At the end of stage 17, Kuss still leads the Vuelta, but only just with his teammate Vingegaard a mere 8 seconds behind, Roglič remains third, but he too shrunk the GC gap to Kuss and sits 1:08 down on the American.
