The final stage of the opening week of the Tour de France saw one of the most hotly-anticipated days of the entire race, with the marquee summit finish on the famed climb of the Puy de Dôme.
The extinct volcano had played host to one of the most enduring duels in Tour de France history, with Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor going shoulder-to-shoulder in 1964, and there was another two-way battle for the yellow jersey between Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma).
Pogačar took the challenge to the race leader, attacking with a vicious acceleration on the double-digit gradients and chipping a further eight seconds off his deficit.
There were two races in one, and the general classification battle unfolded several minutes after Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) had crossed the line to claim the biggest win of his career.
Woods was part of the day's 14-rider breakaway and made a blistering comeback on the final climb to overhaul long-range attacker Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) within 500 metres of the finish line.
You can watch how it all unfolded in our highlights video above.
