Watch: Tour de France stage 1 highlights

The Yates twins go on the rampage in the Basque Country in a thrilling opening stage

Clock17:21, Saturday 1st July 2023

In a gripping opening stage of the 2023 Tour de France the Yates twins went on the attack to decide the first yellow jersey of this year's race.

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla) forged clear on the final descent of a demanding day of racing after a volley of late attacks on the last ascent before the finish.

The two brother built up a near 20-second lead over their rivals on the run in to the finish before the UAE Team Emirates rider dropped his brother on the long drag to the finish.

While there was reason to celebrate in the Yates camp the same couldn't be said for the Movistar and EF-Education EasyPost team buses.

Both teams saw their leaders, Enric Mas (Movistar) and Richard Carapaz (EF-Education EasyPost) come down in a crash with around 22km to go. Mas was immediately taken to hospital, while Carapaz was later ruled out after x-rays revealed a small fracture in his left kneecap.
