Mads Pedersen wins one of the most thrilling finales of the season

Clock19:00, Monday 21st August 2023

A race that almost always results in a run-of-the-mill bunch sprint, the BEMER Cyclassics instead came to an incredible conclusion on Sunday afternoon, with Mads Pedersen emerging victorious amongst the chaos.

For a time, it looked as though a surprise might be on the cards as an all-star trio of Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates), Yves Lampaert (Soudal Quick-Step) and Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe) went clear inside the final 15km. Key to their venture was some tactical blocking of the chasing peloton by Politt’s Bora-Hansgrohe teammates, but even their racecraft was not to deter a rampaging Pedersen.

Sensing that the victory might be just out of the peloton’s grasp, Pedersen launched himself free of the bunch and bridged across to the leading trio. That was not enough for the in-form Dane, who went and won the sprint to carry on his fine season.
