Just as the race was looking like it would start in earnest, the 2023 Vuelta a España looks as if it might be settled with team Jumbo-Visma putting on a demonstration on stage 13. Over the 135 kilometres of Pyraneean stage between Formigal and the Col du Tourmalet.
While the day was billed as a big test between the Jumbo-Visma triumvirate of Jonas Vingegaard, Primož Roglič and Sepp Kuss, and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step). Evenepoel, however, was on a shocker of a day and by the second climb of the day the Belgian champion was already dropped, well before a number of lesser riders. While Soudal-Quick Step confirmed that Evenepoel was not sick, he still ended the day over 27 minutes down on the stage win.
With Evenepoel out of the picture, the day looked set for the Jumbo-Visma show – and show out they did. After pushing the pace all day, with even an attacking foray on one of the long downhills on the parcours, Jumbo-Visma hit the final climb of the Col du Tourmalet and set about demolishing the rest of the remaining riders in the peloton. By the time Vingegaard attacked with just under 8km to go, the stage result seemed set. Jonas Vingegaard was able to take a win to pair with his teammates stage wins early in the Vuelta.
Enric Mas (Movistar) made a valiant effort to try and bridge to Vingegaard, but Kuss was quick to cover the Spaniard. Shortly thereafter Kuss launched his own pair of attacks, the second of which was decisive, giving the American second on the stage. Lastly, Roglič attacked in the final metres, making it a Jumbo-Visma 1-2-3 on the stage and 1-2-3 on the GC, with Kuss leading Roglič and Vingegaard.
