The world of cycling was full of turmoil with a weekend of chaos at the Vuelta a España. Thus, this week on GCN’s World of Cycling, Simon RIchardson sits down with author and journalist William Fotheringham and EF Education-EasyPost sports director Tom Southam to discuss all that happened.

To start, of course, the trio discussed the ins and outs of the Vuelta’s start time controversy for the team time trial on stage 1 and what could be done to prevent something like that in the future.

To provide more context, Si called up Adam Hansen, the head of the riders' union the CPA, to learn more about what goes into the negotiations between the teams, riders and organisers to broker the deals and negotiations that go on behind the scenes at the world's biggest races.

Additionally, the topic of the CPA and rider safety broached the broader topic of rider advocacy for the World of Cycling trio to discuss, which included when cyclists actually protested compulsory helmet regulations.

Outside of the controversy, we hear from the World of Cycling’s resident Vuelta diarist, Jetse Bol (Burgos BH), before discussing Andrea Piccolo’s success and Hugh Carthy’s form with their sports director Tom Southam. Then, of course, we get a Stat Attack from Cillian Kelly that is all about leaders' jerseys at Grand Tours and particularly the leaders' jersey at the Vuelta.

All that and more on the World of Cycling this week!
