History

Back in 1972, Giordano Cremonese started creating nordic skiing suits using his parents’ existing knitwear business, and from that Sportful was born.

By 1985 Sportful had enjoyed plenty of success and, with a growing demand, started manufacturing cycling clothing for the first time. It was soon providing clothing for pro teams including Mapei, the iconic Italian team who competed between 1993 to 2002.

Up until the last years of the 20th century, Sportful only operated in the Italian market but that all changed in 1998 when it went global for the first time. That opened up the company to a wider market and also expanded its reach in the professional ranks. Sportful has since gone on to become clothing sponsors for many more professional teams, riders - including three-time road race world champion Peter Sagan - plus the Italian national team. The Italian brand has been used by multiple Grand Tour winners, including Alberto Contador.

Now into its fifth decade, Sportful has built a strong reputation for creating cutting-edge cycling clothing using the newest and most innovative technology.

Did you know?

Giordano Cremonese was inspired to start creating nordic skiing clothing when he entered the Marcialonga Nordic Skiing Gran Fondo, only to realise that he didn’t have the correct equipment. He then decided to start creating clothing to fill a gap in the market.

Current sponsorships:

  • Peter Sagan
  • Daniel Oss

Highlights:

  • In 1994 Sportful became clothing sponsors for Italian team Mapei for the first time. It resulted in one of the most iconic kits in the 1990s pro peloton and went on to grace podiums at cycling’s biggest races, including at the 1996 Paris-Roubaix when the team took a clean sweep of the podium spots.
  • The brand next teamed up with Tinkoff in 2007, providing the team with clothing for the next nine years. During that time Alberto Contador won multiple Grand Tours while Peter Sagan claimed two of his three consecutive road race world titles.
  • Sportful followed long-time ambassador Sagan to TotalEnergies at the beginning of 2022, becoming the team’s new kit sponsors. Sagan and the Italian brand have been inseparable since first linking up at Tinkoff -Saxo in 2015, with Sportful becoming Bora-Hansgrohe’s kit suppliers when Sagan moved there in 2017, teaming up for his third consecutive world title. It’ll stay that way for the foreseeable future after they signed a 10-year partnership at the end of 2021.
