Why Hardening The F*** Up Isn’t The Answer, But Why It Might Help | The GCN Show Ep. 306

Clock00:00, Tuesday 20th November 2018

Welcome to the GCN Show! This week we discuss new findings in the big debate, do we really need to harden the f#?! up in cycling? We’ve also got Wout Van Aert, e-bikes saving the world and finally, more quantum physics.

This week in the world of cycling, we learned that Vincenzo Nibali has been out training his descending skills, ON GRAVEL. Doesn’t look much like the Poggio but imagine if that was an alternative finish to Milan San Remo… Wouldn’t it be great! We also learned this week that in our recent rule breaking hyperbike video, one more thing in it has just become illegal. Not the mullet, unfortunately, but the socks. The UCI said last week that they will be hereby enforcing the much-derided maximum sock length rule. Controversially though, there is no minimum.

This week, we also learnt that it’s the perception of pain rather than the pain itself, that prevents you from exercising harder. This was from a two-part study conducted by Samuele Marcora and published in Progress In Brain Research. It concluded that perception of effort is the limiting factor in exercise performance in a fatigued state. Great news, Most of us can probably go harder than we feel that we can. Just HTFU. What’s particularly interesting is that this research builds on the Central Governor theory which was proposed by the now slightly controversial physiologist Tim Noakes. Yes, his theory is that your brain limits how hard you push yourself as a form of self-preservation. A rev-limiter if you like. But Marcora’s research suggests that the rev limiter can be moved depending on your perception.

Do you think we all need to H.T.F.U.? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. 👇

Illegal Super Bike | So Fast It Was Banned!

Have we finally found the first carbon fibre monocoque UCI-banned superbike which can topple the time of a modern road bike? The Hotta has Tour de France Prologue Victories and Olympic Medals to its name and we've got not just one, but two of these very special machines to pit against a brand-new Canyon Aeroad. But there's a twist, one of the Hotta's is kitted out in full retro-guise, but the other, is a modern take, assembled with cutting-edge components to blend the two worlds into one. Could this create the ultimate mix of modern efficiency with old-school aerodynamic madness? There's only one way to find out!
