Over the last three years the UCI have been testing the use of disc brakes in top end road racing, and as of July the 1st the UCI announced that disc brakes would be legal in all races. With the UCI relaxing disc brake rules, bike manufacturers have been getting behind aerodynamic disc brake bikes, showing that disc brakes deserve their place on proper race bikes. With this latest release, now both of Orbea’s top end road bikes, the Orca and Orca Aero, are offered with disc brakes.

Aside from the disc brake mount instead of the direct mount brakes the Orca Aero Disc uses the same Freeflow fork as the rim brake version. Orbea claim that this fork saves 4 watts over the fork on the standard Orca. Which equates to 8.4seconds at 50pkh over 50km. Admittedly that might not sound like a huge amount, but races are regularly won by much less. And even if you aren’t racing at a high level, saving that bit more energy on a group ride is going to keep you fresher to beat all your mates at that town sign sprint. And yes, it is noticeable out on the road.

Moving back to the frame, Orbea uses kammtail style tube shapes, which are a common feature on aero bike designs. Kammtails, use a similar cross section shape to a traditional aerofoil, but with the tail removed. There are a number of reasons for this - removing the tail helps reduce weight but also soften the airflow over the bottles.
