GCN Racing News Show: Is Soudal-Visma on its way to reality?

Dan Lloyd breaks down the ins and outs of last week's racing

Blockbuster team mergers, championships and flying cyclists – this week in racing really had it all. As always, Dan Lloyd is back on the GCN Racing News Show to dig into it all.

First and foremost, Dan delves into the possible Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-Quick Step merger. What would the merger mean for the riders? How would the timeline work? Who would be on the way out with the marrying of the two blockbuster squads? And, most importantly, why does Jumbo-Visma need a merger instead of getting a big sponsor for themselves?

While this is just reported, it does raise an incredible number of questions for cycling fans to ponder.

Away from speculation, last weekend saw a thrilling edition of the European road championship with a drag race on the Vamberg. In the end, Christophe Laporte was able to attack solo on the last lap and hold off a charging pair of his trade teammates, Wout van Aert and Olav Kooij. It was an impressive win by the Frenchman who will certainly have some bragging rights within the fastmen of the Jumbo-Visma setup.

On the women’s side, SD-Worx was similarly dominant with a 1-2-3 in the road race. The trio was led by the surprise winner Mischa Bredewold, who won solo ahead of Lorena Wiebes and Lotte Kopecky. SD-Worx went one better than Jumbo-Visma, however, by also collecting the time trial with Marlen Ressuer.

Joshua Tarling from Great Britain and Ineos Grenadiers won the men’s time trial, beating Stefan Bissegger and Wout van Aert.

With the peloton winding up for the final push of the season in Italy over the next couple of weeks, this past week was a bit quiet on the racing front. Beyond the championships, it was really left to the Tour of Luxembourg to deliver the action, and deliver it did. The race was complete with a classic Ben Healy breakaway win, a Victor Campenaerts time trial victory and a close fought overall victory that went to a resurgent Marc Hirschi.

Last but not least, cyclocross in the United States keeps humming with the weekends racing in Rochester, New York.
