With the World Championships long gone, the Vuelta a España in the rear view mirror and the European Championships decided, there remains one big date in the European diary for the men’s peloton: Il Lombardia, la classica delle foglie morte.

The WorldTour season in Europe will draw to a close in the race of the falling leaves this Saturday, as this year’s Il Lombardia champion will be crowned on the roads of Italy. This week, the World of Cycling show focuses on that last monument of the season.

Available now on GCN+, Conor Dunne is joined by ten-time Il Lombardia participant Phippa York, as well as author and journalist Andy McGrath. The trio discuss their expectations for the race and also cast an eye on the sensational departure of Primož Roglič from Jumbo-Visma.

Away from the studio, GCN’s Cillian Kelly is on hand to question whether or not Il Lombardia is all that special in his regular installment of Stat Attack.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) is the two-time defending champion and will be looking to join the likes of Gino Bartali and Sean Kelly on three Giro di Lombardia titles. Now known as Il Lombardia, the year’s final Monument challenges the riders over nigh on 240km and well over 4,000m of climbing.

Roglič, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) will be amongst those challenging the Slovenian, and ahead of the race, we previewed that Italian classic on this week’s World of Cycling.

Their analysis is complimented by the input of Lorenza Rota, whilst UAE Team Emirates DS Fabio Baldato gives us the inside track on the route and race favourites.

For all that and much more, check out this week’s World of Cycling on GCN+.
