Nine days into the Vuelta a España and Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) wears the red jersey with a handsome 43 second advantage over second-placed Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates). That is a sentence we are confident in saying that nobody imagined we would be writing coming out of the first rest day, but indeed here we are. After a thrilling first week of action, the Vuelta is perfectly poised heading into its second week.

Kuss’ teammates Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard were the big pre-race favourites, alongside Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), but the exceptional form and wily race craft of the American has well and truly put the cat amongst the pigeons. His position and that of Jumbo-Visma’s rivals is the main topic of this week’s World of Cycling episode, which is out now on GCN+.

Simon Richardson is joined in the studio by author and journalist, Andy McGrath, and two-time Vuelta runner-up Pippa York, to discuss all the action from the first nine stages. Alongside pondering whether or not Kuss can actually win the Vuelta, our team of experts wonder why so little attention is being paid to Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Si has even come up with his own nickname for stage 9 winner, Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe)!

Away from the studio, we have our resident statistician Cillian Kelly providing a recap of the first week in his usual trademark fashion, whilst we hear from our diarist Burgos-BH’s Jetse Bol, with the breakaway specialist giving us an insight into how his race has gone.
