This week on the GCN Tech Show, Ollie Bridgewood is joined by Manon Lloyd as they look at the latest news coming out of the cycling world, including WorldTour sponsor changes, fresh glasses from Oakley, and the main talking point: which bike brands won the most in this season of racing?
The 2023 season of WorldTour racing is now firmly behind us, with 2024 just around the corner. At this time of the year it's great to look back and unpack the season just gone. From a tech perspective, it is always interesting to have a look at just which bike brands performed the best.
In the show, Manon and Ollie take a deeper dive into the statistics behind this and look at which bikes were most successful at the Monuments and Grand Tours, as well as total WorldTour wins. Who do you think will come out on top?
Hot and spicy tech
Even in the absence of any racing on the road, there has been plenty going on in the cycling world. Here are some of the top stories from the last week in case you missed them.
New Oakley glasses
Oakley has announced a new pair of glasses called the Space Encoder. These were actually created by accident after a batch of regular Encoder lenses were cut incorrectly. These feature ventilation holes at the top of the one-piece lens and a cutout notch in the middle.
Wireless brakes
Blake Samson, over on our sister channel GMBN, decided that the time had come for the world to have wireless brakes. In the latest instalment of his ‘Blake Builds series' he made a set of full-functioning wireless mountain bike brakes. To turn his idea into a reality he used parts from an RC car and some simple consumer-level electronics. Head over to the GMBN YouTube channel to find out how he got on putting them to the test.
Bora-Hansgrohe make the switch to SRAM
The Bora-Hansgrohe team has been spotted using bikes equipped with SRAM groupsets at a recent training camp. Currently, there have not been any formal communications from the team regarding this change from Shimano.
Groupama-FDJ switch to Wilier bikes
After a 22-year partnership with French bike manufacturer Lapierre, Groupama-FDJ has signed a new multi-year deal with Wilier to be the team's bike sponsor. This deal makes the team the second WorldTour team that the Italian bike brand sponsors alongside Astana.
TotalEnergies set to ride Enve bikes
With the road retirement of Peter Sagan, Team TotalEnergies will no longer be riding Specialized bikes. The brand supported the team during Sagan’s tenure however with his retirement that partnership appears to have run its course. Replacing Specialized as bike sponsor is Enve, marking the brand's first foray into WorldTour bike sponsorship.
Your comments and bikes
It turns out that it is not just you out there who are keen on a 24-hour-long bike vault special. Those of you who have been part of the GCN tech community from the start might remember a certain Jon Cannings. He has slid into the comments section this week voicing his approval for the mega edition bike vault. Could this be the start of it becoming a reality?
Following that theme, in light of the GCN app closure in the next week, how you go about uploading your bikes for entry into the vault is set to change. Instead of using the app, we will be reverting back to the GCN uploader that we have linked to here. From next week any submissions you wish to make should be done through this.
