Simon Yates is a British professional cyclist who currently races for Team Jayco AlUla. Yates’ brother Adam Yates races for the UAE Team Emirates squad.

Simon Yates has been with the same team since turning professional at the start of the 2014 season. He is a former winner of the Vuelta a España, taking the title in 2018. A world-class climber, Yates has won stages in all three of cycling’s Grand Tours, including six stages at the Giro d’Italia and two stages at the 2019 Tour de France.

Yates was a talented junior and he took a breakthrough win in the points race at the UCI World Track Championships in 2013. A stage win at the Tour de l’Avenir in 2011 demonstrated his road calibre. A stage at the Tour of Britain followed in 2013, along with two more stages at the Tour de l’Avenir with the British Cycling graduate earning a spot at Orica GreenEdge the following year.

Yates progressed steadily over the first two years of his career on the Australian team before winning a stage and finishing sixth overall at the Vuelta a España. A year later Yates finished seventh in the Tour de France and won the white jersey as the best young rider. The 2018 season saw him win three stages of the Giro d’Italia and come within a few days winning the race overall. He cracked on stage 19 and dropped out of the maglia rosa. He eventually finished 22nd overall. Later that season Yates bounced back to win the Vuelta a España.

The 2019 season saw Yates pick up yet another top-10 finish in the Giro d’Italia before taking two stage wins in the Tour de France. He would take another Giro d’Italia stage in 2021 and finally finish on the podium behind Egan Bernal and Damiano Caruso. In 2022 Yates would win another two Giro stages but fail to finish both the Italian Grand Tour and the Vuelta a España. In 2023, Yates notched only one win with his victory on the final stage of the Tour Down Under but had a very consistent season. Out of the four stage races Yates completed, he finished top-10 in all of them, including a fourth place at the Tour de France.

Yates has a contract with Jayco AlUla through to the end of 2024.
