With the Giro d’Italia in our rearview mirror, attention is slowly turning to the Tour de France and the numerous selection dilemmas that face each squad. For Israel-Premier Tech, debates will surely be had over whether to take four-time winner, Chris Froome. On that theme, this week’s World of Cycling focuses on the legacy of the British rider who defined the last decade of racing.
A winner of all three Grand Tours throughout his career, Froome has finished on the podium of the Tour de France no fewer than six times, but the 38-year-old has not returned to his best condition since a life-threatening crash in 2019. Moving to Israel-Premier Tech at the end of the 2020 season, Froome hoped to reignite his career but his only notable result has been third place on stage 12’s summit finish atop Alpe d’Huez at last year’s race.
Si Richardson is joined in the World of Cycling studio by author and journalist, William Fotheringham, and EF Education-EasyPost sports director, Tom Southam, to reflect on Froome’s illustrious career to date. The trio debate where his palmarès stack up against the greatest cyclists of all time, and look at the prospects of him returning to his former glories.
GCN followed Froome at the Tour of Rwanda earlier this season, and we hear his memories of the remarkable comeback that saw him win the 2018 Giro d’Italia.
